Students and staff of Stephenville High converged in the school's gymnasium last Friday to hear which students nabbed athletic awards for the 2009-10 academic year.

"Well, what do you think, has it been a busy year?" asked Coach Randy Alexander, to which the assembly gave loud hoots and hollers.

He said the school had an extensive sporting program, which included every School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador category, with the exception of table tennis.

"And we compete proudly in every sport," added the coach.

For the high levels of sporting participation School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador issued the school a gold star banner, which was unfurled at the assembly.

Kristen Cooze and Patric Alexander picked up Senior Student Athlete of the Year awards, while Shelena Benoit and Dillan Pearce nabbed the Junior Student Athlete of the Year accolades.

Shane Duffney won the Darren Pearce Memorial Track and Field award, and Brandon Wiseman picked up the Dedicated Spartan Spirit award.

Vice-Principal David Hepditch presented the school's Wall of Fame awards. He noted when students enter the school in Grade 9, the school keeps a book - "the sports bible" - which tracks such things as players, teams and awards.

Upon reviewing the book, he said there were five winners this year: Patric Alexander, Jodie Benoit, Kristen Cooze, Samantha House and Dylan Noseworthy.

Team MVP awards were also presented [turn to sports page for complete list of winners.]

Towards the end of the assembly, Mr. Alexander also praised coaches and teacher sponsors who participated in the school's sports program over the past year.

"Before you leave school this year, you should thank the people ... who make it possible for you to play," he said to the students.
