On July 11, Bay St. George resident Bruce Barrett will join a group of Canadian athletes with vision loss in Muskoka, ON, to compete in the Blind Guys Tri.
The 30 triathletes will be joined by 30 sighted guides as they make their way through a 750 m swim, a 20 km bike ride, and a 5 km run.
Mr. Barrett says he attended the event last year to learn what it was all about, and has been training on and off since the winter for the 2009 race.
"The point is to finish it," he says. "It's a good cause - raising money to fight cancer."
Funds raised during the event will go towards cancer research, including future cancer treatments - including head and neck, lung, breast and colorectal cancers.
The Blind Guys Tri Team's website states the event was founded to inspire individuals, and bring a positive change to the communities around them - and helping competitors serve as role models in their communities.
