Junior badminton club competes at Atlantic competition

From May 1 to 3, eight members of the Stephenville Junior Badminton Club competed at the Atlantic Junior (U19)/ Juvenile (U16)/ Under 14 Badminton Championship in Truro, NS.

Athletes attending from the Stephenville Junior Badminton Club were: Justin Noseworthy (U19), Bryan Downey (U19), Krista Hogan (U16), Justine White (U16), Dillan Pearce (U16), William Forsey (U16), Emily Alexander (U14), and Devon MacDonald (U14).

From May 1 to 3, eight members of the Stephenville Junior Badminton Club competed at the Atlantic Junior (U19)/ Juvenile (U16)/ Under 14 Badminton Championship in Truro, NS.

Athletes attending from the Stephenville Junior Badminton Club were: Justin Noseworthy (U19), Bryan Downey (U19), Krista Hogan (U16), Justine White (U16), Dillan Pearce (U16), William Forsey (U16), Emily Alexander (U14), and Devon MacDonald (U14).

All athletes represented the club and province. However, Emily Alexander was the only team member to place in the medal standings at the championships.

Emily was a Triple Crown winner as she captured gold medals in U14 Girl's Singles, Girl's U14 Girl's Doubles and U14 Mixed Doubles.

Bryan Downey had the next best finish, he was a semi finalist in U19 singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Several other athletes placed in at least one semi (top 4) or quarter final (top 8) event before being defeated.

In April 2010, Stephenville Junior Badminton Club will play host to the Atlantic Junior/ Juvenile/ U14 Badminton Championships in Stephenville. The very best Badminton Players from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador will converge on Stephenville for competitions featuring some of the best athletes in Atlantic Canada.

Girls Singles

Finals: 1st: Emily Alexander (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) defeated

Anita Sidhu (Nova Scotia) Scores: 21-, 21-

Girls Doubles

Finals: 1st: Emily Alexander (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) & Maggie Gunter (New Brunswick) defeated Alexa Nicholson/Jenny Wang (New Brunswick) Scores: 21-, 21-

Mixed Doubles

Finals: 1st: Isaac Davis-Power (CBS, NL) / Emily Alexander (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) defeated Jocelyn Cormier / Maggie Gunter (New Brunswick) Scores: 21-16, 21-13.

Junior (Under19)

Boys Singles

Semi-Finals: Bryan Downey (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) was defeated by Jerry Zhang (NB) 15-21, 21-15, 21-9.

Boys Doubles

Semi Finals : Bryan Downey (NL)and Patrick Thompson (PEI) were defeated by Michael Coates/Nicholas Godin (NB) 21-18, 21-9.

Mixed Doubles

Semi Finals : Bryan Downey (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) and Stephanie Stanley (CBS, NL) were defeated by Michael Coates/Stephanie Graves (NB) 21-18, 18-21, 22-20.

Justin Noseworthy/Courtney Woodford (NL) - quarter finals in mixed doubles

Juvenile (Under16)

Boys Singles

Dillan Pearce (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) - quarter finals in singles

Girls Singles

Krista Hogan (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) - quarter finals in singles

Boys Doubles

Dillan Pearce/Willaim Forsey (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) - quarter finals in doubles.

Girls Doubles

Semi Finals: Krista Hogan / Justine White (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) were defeated by Tineke Vanderweit/ Claire MacDougal (NS) 21-6, 21-10.

Mixed Doubles

Dillan Pearce /Krista Hogan (Stephenville Junior Badminton Club) - quarter finals in mixed doubles.
