The Caribou Curling Club will be a hot spot early in 2009, when the club hosts the provincial Tankard and Junior Championship Tournaments.
"The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Junior Championship is coming up first - that's Jan. 3 to 7 [2009]," said Dennis Byrne, host committee member. "The winner of this championship will represent the province at the nationals to crown a junior champion."
He said the tournament consists of eight male and eight female teams, with the winning male and female teams heading to the national tournament, which takes place in Salmon Arm, BC.
"Then we have the Tankard, which is Feb. 3 to 8," said Mr. Byrne. "The winner of this will be the Newfoundland rep at the Brier in Calgary, AB, on March 7 to 15."
He said it's hopeful the Brad Gushue rink, Olympic gold medal winners, will be playing at the tournament in Stephenville.
"There's going to be a lot of people showing up to watch," said Mr. Byrne, adding that daily and weekly passes will be available for the tournaments.
"You've got the top ten teams in the tankard - they're the top ten teams in Newfoundland," he said. "It's really competitive."
