With sunnier days and warmer temperatures, the Georgian has noticed residents in and around the Bay St. George area are increasingly taking to outdoor activities.
Over the past week, we've seen people tackling home siding and window upgrades, cultivating their gardens, taking their pets out for strolls or runs, riding bicycles or rollerblading, or just enjoying some time on their patios.
And so too, various organized sports are starting to gear up for the summer months. We encourage all non-profit clubs, groups and teams to submit photos, stats, and schedules for the Georgian's sports page.
Whatever it is you'd like to share - whether it be a big win, an inspiring story, that once-in-a-lifetime shot, or even a rookie taking their first strides - we want to hear about it. Give us a shout (643-4531), send an email (editor@thegeorgian.ca), or drop into the Georgian office on Main St. in Stephenville (across from Domino's) with your photos and information.
That said, we would like to remind all sports enthusiasts, both well seasoned and newly minted, to be safe this summer. Accidents can happen to anyone, but precautions will help minimize any unwarranted injuries over the summer months. Here are a few safety tips from Health Canada:
° When introducing new activities, take time to practice and master skills, then gradually increase intensity;
° Wear protective equipment that's been approved by the Canadian Standards association, such as lifejackets and helments (The Georgian has witnessed many people not wearing proper headgear and such while out on their bicycles or rollerblading - wear a helmet!);
° Before you play, ensure indoor and outdoor spaces are safe;
° Keep a constant eye over children in public places, around water, and in parks;
° Drink plenty of fluids - don't let yourself get dehydrated;
° Wear footwear and clothing that's comfortable and related to the sports activity;
° Be mindful of any particular rules or guidelines for the specific sport you're playing.
As well, be sure to wear sunscreen and protective eyewear whenever possible. The official start is less than three weeks away, but it's never too early to start enjoying a safe and productive summer.
