As each graduate walked across the stage to receive their certificate or diploma, their energy and enthusiasm was obvious - big smiles and broad shoulders were in abundance.
Proud family members, friends, and fellow graduates were on hand to ensure the moment wouldn't soon be forgotten; with claps, hoots and photos snapped as the presentations were made.
It's likely that across many minds were dreams and aspirations for what the future would bring during last week's graduation ceremony at the College of the North Atlantic Bay St. George campus. And for a while, at least, thoughts of student loans and other blunt realities of post-graduation life could be ignored.
But there was something else probably kept in mind - all of the hard work that each graduate put into making it through their programs. Of course, there were likely a few slack days here and there, and probably a few hazy mornings. Overall though, each graduate completed their required coursework in a timely fashion in order to graduate.
And those that put in that extra effort were rewarded with such things as honour society recognition and for one lucky grad, being named student of the year. Hard work really does pay off, and sometimes it has its tangible rewards.
One can only hope the graduates keep this is mind as they venture into the 'real world' of work and responsibilities. Because no matter how much (or how little) effort one puts into their jobs or various other tasks, somebody is always watching - and taking note.
Perhaps the same could be said for the individuals and assorted groups who've been volunteering their time to pick up garbage and other debris around Bay St. George over the past couple of weeks.
Their hard work and dedication to keeping the area clean and tidy is certainly greatly appreciated, even if we don't throw much praise or recognition.
And as the number of visitors to the area swells during the summer months (yes folk, summer officially starts this week) - people will definitely notice and be pleased to see that Bay St. George is well maintained by its residents.
By their very virtue, hard work and dedication have their own rewards for the individual - and they also rarely go unnoticed by others, even if we don't realize it.
Taking note
