As we head into May and get ready for the sun-filled days of summer, the Georgian can't help but notice that some people seem a little eager to shed vestiges of the colder months.

While last week's temperatures weren't considered overly warm, but there were a few residents walking around with shorts and tees. Perhaps they wanted an early tan (which the Georgian doesn't recommend - wear sunscreen!), wanted to feel the cool breeze on their arms and legs, or had their winter clothes already packed away until the latter months of the year.

Some others could be seen peddling their bicycles throughout the region, which in and of itself isn't a bad idea. Biking is a great way to get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air, and get to and from where you want to go without polluting the environment.

That said, the Georgian also noticed that some people aren't taking the time to avail of some basic precautions that would keep bike riders much safer while peddling. What could be simpler than wearing a bicycle helmet? Come on folks, your noggin can only take so many knocks. And if there's an accident, a vehicle or slab of asphalt can do a lot of permanent damage.

And if you're out on the bicycle, realize that you're not a pedestrian. You have to obey the rules of the road like any other vehicle operator. That might sound a little silly, but it is very important to respect others and be able to communicate with others. Know your hand signals, so if you're wanting to make a turn or come to stop, you can let others know what you're about to do.

Of course, there are extra precautions you should take while out and about on your bike. If you're going to cross the street, get off the bike and walk with the bike. And look both ways before making the cross, because regardless of how much you pimp your ride, another vehicle can do both you and your bicycle a fair bit of damage.

If you're going to be out when there's anything less than a perfectly sunny day (and let's face it, not every day is going to be sun sweltering), be sure to wear bright clothes or clothing with reflective material. You need to be seen in order for others to avoid crashing into you.

When you are taking your bicycle out from winter storage, be sure to give it an inspection before taking to the streets. Give those brakes a good review, and check to make sure equipment such as the chain, gears, and tires are all in top shape.

And the Georgian would like to remind you again to wear your helmet. It could save your life. Really. And if that's not enough, many municipalities have bylaws requiring people to wear protective headgear while bicycling - and you wouldn't want to have to pay a ticket or a fine for not playing it safe.
