The Last of the Red Hot Lovers
July 30, 2009
Stage Director: Annette Procunier
Cast: Allison Basha, Kate Etienne, Michael Fenwick and Laura Beth Gray
There might have been a small cast, but Stephenville Theatre Festival's production of The Last of the Red Hot Lovers was big on vitality and charisma.
Neil Simon's classic comedy follows Benny Cashman (Michael Fenwick), a married middle-aged man who wants to get in on the sexual revolution and have an affair. He tries to seduce three women - a femme fatale (Laura Beth Gray), an actress (Allison Basha), and a family friend (Kate Etienne).
Fenwick was a natural in the lead role, with a knack for comedic timing and self-deprecation. He maintained a high level of intellect and charm throughout the show and genuinely looked like he was relishing every second on stage.
Gray slinked her way across the stage as a seductress, playing up both her glamorous and comedic talents. Basha was a big ball of energy onstage, providing an over-the-top performance. Etienne was equally impressive, but with a more restrained and subtle stage presence.
The simple set, lighting and sound were very good. A special mention must be given to costume designer Monique Hodder, who did an excellent job in creating costumes that evoked both the period of the play and the personalities of the characters.
The Last of the Red Hot Lovers had plenty of laughs and sexual innuendo that all but the most prudish audience members would likely enjoy. The show is set to run Aug. 5, 8, 11 and 13.
