Flat Bay, NL - Taking care of your health through sweat lodge ceremonies, smudging, and proper diet - how to reuse items through crafts, and how to respect the earth, were just some of the things learned by youth in the Flat Bay area this summer.
The Mi'kmaq Youth Mentorship Program, in partnership with the Flat Bay Indian Band and Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador, was a great success this season.
"The idea of how everything is connected is true," said Cindy Kyle, team leader of the Conservation Corps. "The children have learned through traditional teachings about the connection of culture to the environment."
In celebration of the Green Team's successful project, a thank you event will take place at the Flat Bay Powwow grounds today, Aug.19, for the children, their parents, and those involved in helping to make the Mi'kmaq Youth Mentorship Program a success.
The Green Team program was established in 1993 and has employed close to 2000 youth since it's early beginnings. More than 250 projects have been completed in more than 100 communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.
