On Sunday, Aug. 15 at around 2:10 p.m., Bay St. George RCMP received a report that a pedestrian/motor vehicle collision had just occurred near the Bank of Montreal in Stephenville on Main Street.

Complainant had stated that a vehicle had struck a 16-month-old child in a stroller and that the child's arm might be broken.

Five minutes later RCMP members arrived and observed the ambulance was just leaving with child and mother. All witnesses and vehicle driver identified themselves and agreed to provide statements.

The investigation revealed the driver stopped at stop sign in her vehicle and looked to see if she could merge with traffic. She did not see the woman pushing the child in the stroller.  The mother entered the crosswalk and as she did, the driver began to inch forward in the vehicle, looking the other way.

The driver stopped when she felt a bump and then heard the noise of the stroller falling over. The mother fell as well as she had been holding on to the stroller. The mother attended to her child and the police were called.

A summary offence ticket for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk was issued to the driver.

The police attended hospital and spoke with the mother, who advised they had already been discharged from hospital with minor injuries and no broken bones.
