While people throughout the country were celebrating Canada Day, many in this province observed a more sombre anniversary.
Thursday marked the 94th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel. Of the 801 members of the First Royal Newfoundland Regiment who participated in the battle, only 68 answered the roll call the next morning.
In Stephenville, about 100 dignitaries and citizens gathered at the Cenotaph for a commemorative ceremony.
"On this Canada Day and Memorial Day, we solemnly remember Beaumont Hamel and let us never forget the sacrifices that were made," said Dave Johnston, commanding officer of the 708 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.
"Also on this special day, let us remember the veterans of World War Two, Korean and those of present day conflicts. We owe them all a huge thank-you and may God bless them."
During the ceremony, the Last Post was played and the Act of Remembrance read aloud, along with two minutes of silence, and laying of wreaths by various dignitaries.
Among those who were in attendance to pay their respects were Enos Fudge and his family.
"We're here to remember the people that died to give us freedom and a great way of life," he said.
The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 35, in Stephenville. Turn to page seven for more coverage.
