Council briefs - As the school year winds down, the Town of Kippens is encouraging youth to consider joining up for the town's summer recreation program.
"If anyone has questions about our summer recreation program, they can call anyone on the recreation committee," said Councillor Leon Benoit, at last week's regular council meeting.
Committee members are Brian Roberts, Heather Shears, Josephine Noseworthy, Councillor Benoit, Norma Childs, Wayne Simon and Rosemary Ryan Forsey.
"Anyone interested in helping out on Canada Day, please contact one of our committee members," he added. "Plans are underway for the upcoming Canada Day celebrations and our recreation committee is very active."
He noted interviews would take place this week for students interested in working with the program.

Committee reports
Councillor Debbie Brake-Patten said she was still waiting to hear from Minister Dianne Whalen regarding a meeting. Gerry Flynn, town clerk and CAO, said he was in contact with MHA Tony Cornect's office, who he said would let the town know when the minister would be available; Deputy Mayor Barry Noftall told council there was one fire call since their last meeting. He said a call came in at 12:15 a.m. on May 29 that a car located at 171 Kippens Rd., was on fire. He said the blaze was responded to quickly, but the vehicle was a total loss; Councillor Wayne Simon said that on the evening of June 2, a water line broke in the basement of a residence at 4 Edwards Lane, noting nobody was home at the time and the curb stop was buried. He said town workers were contacted and the issue was dealt with. The councillor thanked the staff for the efforts. Gerry Flynn said anyone who have emergencies or problems after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays or on weekends can call 649-0039; Councillor John Dawson said the beautification committee was working on foliage outside the town office, and noted Kippens community garden opened on May 29;Councillor Dawson also noted the next Southwest Coast joint council meeting would take place in Kippens this September; Councillor Leon Benoit congratulated Katarina Roxon, Rosemary Ryan Forsey and Kristen Cooze for their recent athletic awards;
Permits
The following residents received permits to build residential sheds/ garages: Maurice Woodfine at 11 Marine Dr.; Leonard and Regina Duffenais at 28 Juniper Ave.; Howard Companion at 6 Bayview Heights; Colleen Ryan at 46 Lakeview Dr.; and Eric Fromm at 5 Fir Ave.;Pat Brennan received a permit to build a patio enclosure and ramp at 448A Kippens Rd.;Larry and Evelyn Smith were approved a permit to build a fence at 6 Oceanview Dr.; Augustine Doucette received permission to build a residential house at 9 Fir Ave.; Theresa Keeping of Oceanview Estates received a permit to erect an office building at 269-279 Kippens Rd. Councillor Simon opposed the motion;Council agreed to rescind a motion passed at their May 14 meeting, which was a residential permit issued to Pamela Sinnicks for 214 Kippens Rd. Deputy Mayor Noftall said the permit was subject to a variance request, which exceeded the authority of council;
Finances & business
Council agreed to pay invoices totalling $34,728.55;A request from the Georgian to place a $60 congratulatory ad in the 2010 high school graduates supplement was approved;A request for a $100 donation to Hershey track and field team was approved;Council agreed to waive permit fees for youth participating in Youth Ventures;Council agreed to update the town's fence policy;A request to send town CAO/ town clerk Gerry Flynn to health and safety training in Corner Brook in July was approved;A motion to eliminate maximum setback in development regulations was approved;A motion to approve an amendment to Local Government Gas Tax Funding Agreement was passed.
