The nominees for this year's Stephen Awards have been announced.

For Citizen of the Year, Stephenville Rotary nominated Terry Smith and the Bay St. George Sick Children's Foundation put forward Robert Miller as their candidate.

There are four entries in the Youth of the Year category. Stephenville High School Duke of Edinburgh Award Program nominated William Forsey, Jennifer O'Quinn and Jenny Thistle. The Girl Guides of Canada named Alyssa Chaffey as their candidate.

The lone Junior Male Athlete nominated was Patric Alexander. He was nominated by Stephenville Minor Hockey Association.

There are four nominees vying for the title of Junior Female Athlete of the Year. Stephenville Junior Badminton Club nominated Emily Alexander, Stephenville Minor Broomball nominated Kristen Cooze, Whaleback Nordic Ski Club put forward Jillian Forsey, and Girl Guides of Canada chose Stephanie Fradsham as their candidate.

In addition to the competitive awards, 15 Volunteer Appreciation certificates will be handed out at the event. These accolades are going to: Barry Aucoin (Stephenville High Duke of Edinburgh Award Program), Gerry Clark (Whaleback Seniors), Robert Dollard (Hershey Track and Field), Jenny Downey (Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 35), Ruth Doyle (Bay St. George Literacy Council), Florence Higgins (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), Val Hulan (Stephenville Winter Carnival Committee), Dianna Kung (Stephenville Relay for Life), Marsha MacInnis (Bay St. George Sick Children's Foundation), Marjorie McKay (Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Auxiliary), Margaret Rowe (Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Foundation), Wayne Simon (Kippens Recreation Committee), Lisa and Terry Smith (Stephenville Rotary Club), Maureen Tiller (Girl Guides of Canada), and Cyril White (Stephenville Taekwondo School).

Darlene Oake, committee chair, said she encourages everyone to come out for the Stephen Awards ceremony to say thanks to those being honoured.

Tickets for the awards ceremony are available at Ben's Pharmacy and Debbie's Video Shoppe, both located in Stephenville, until April 14. The ceremony itself gets underway April 17, at 6:30 p.m.
