Sewer, rec centre projects also discussed at meeting

Kippens residents are asked to have patience when it comes to the clearing of snow from town streets.

During the Feb. 16 regular town council meeting, Councillor Wayne Simon said both he and the town clerk had received a number of calls regarding snow clearing over the previous weekend.

"We don't have two roads in Kippens to clean anymore," said the councillor. "Eventually, they are going to get around and they're going to clean all the roads. They were doing an exceptionally good job on Saturday and still people were saying, 'why's my road not done yet?' You've got to give them a chance, you know, they were going flat out."

Councillor Debbie Brake Patton informed council the sewer committee was still waiting to hear back from government regarding the town's proposed sewer plan.

"I think we may soon have to call a meeting with our local elected officials to see where our application rests with government," said Councillor Brake Patton.

"We've been waiting an awful long time and I think, and the rest of council agrees with me, that we've been waiting too long. ... We wanted to have our sewer treatment plant started by the spring, it's essential."

She noted the town cannot always rely on the private pumping companies to take care of residents' septic tanks.

"We have to make that sure we're not at the mercy of an outside company down the road," said Councillor Brake Patton.

Councillor Leon Benoit told council the recreation committee recently held a meeting with government officials regarding a feasibility study for a new multi-purpose centre.

In addition, he noted on Feb. 15, a steering committee was formed to further look into the project.

"Our steering committee consists of Heather Shears, Rosemary Forsey, Leon Benoit, Austin Alexander and Regis O'Quinn," said the councillor. "If anyone from Kippens couldn't make the meeting and want to have some input, please call me at 643-5583 - or any of our committee members."
