It's been a few years since the last group folded, but renewed interest has led to the establishment of a new Scout troop in Stephenville.

The 2nd Stephenville Scouts was officially formed last month. Its four members have moved through the Scouting movement, first as Beavers then as Cubs.

"We had some senior Cubs who were interested in coming back for a fourth year," said Mike Benoit, local section leader and deputy commissioner for Western Region of NL Council.

"There was no Scout group, so I started one this year so that they would have a place to come back to and still be a part of the Scouting movement."

He said the troop's members would take on more responsibilities than they did as Beavers or Cubs.

"For example, when we set up camps, instead of camps in a cabin, they would have camps in a tent and sleep outdoors," he said. "Instead of us preparing their meals, they would plan their menus, buy their groceries, and cook their own meals."

Mr. Benoit has been involved with the 2nd Stephenville group for several years, acting as a leader with Beavers, Cubs and now Scouts. He said there's a satisfaction in witnessing the members' progress.

"I've seen these boys come in through Beavers six years ago in Grade Kindergarten and now they're in Grade 6 and they're doing Scouting things," he said.

"We couldn't bring them to camp unless their parents were with them, now we're at a point where they go to camp themselves, set up their own tents and cook their own meals, so it's quite the path."

For those interested in joining the 2nd Stephenville Scouts, either as a member or leader, Mr. Benoit said he can be contacted at 643-4047. The troop meets 6 p.m. on Tuesday evenings at Stephenville Elementary.
