Residents of several communities in Bay St. George are mourning the death of a youth who perished in a Mattis Point house fire on Jan. 25.
RCMP are not releasing the name of a 15-year-old Bay St. George resident who died, at the request of the family. An autopsy revealed the youth, whose remains were found in the home after the fire, died from smoke inhalation.
Bay St. George RCMP said five people, including the homeowner, were inside the home when the fire broke out. An investigation into the fire's cause has uncovered that the blaze began near the home's wood stove and moved quickly.
Fire departments from the Town of Stephenville Crossing, the Town of St. George's, and the Marine Institute's Safety Emergency and Response Training Centre in Stephenville responded to the afternoon blaze.
Canadian Red Cross has provided clothing and other cares to the homeowner, who lost all of their possessions in the blaze.
