Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital welcomed its first baby of the new year on Jan. 17.
Cohen Martin was born at 2:22 Sunday morning after the ambulance carrying his mother and father from Port aux Basques to Corner Brook diverted to Stephenville.
Cohen's mother, Deanna Battiste, said the drive from Port aux Basques to Stephenville took two and a half hours. Because of stormy weather conditions she said ambulance drivers thought it best to bring her to the hospital in Stephenville rather than continue on in rough road conditions.
Cohen is considered an emergency delivery as all West Coast births are now planned for Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook. Hospitals in Port aux Basques and Stephenville do not have doctors at present with obstetric/gynecological specialities.
Cohen was delivered by obstetric nurses Sherri Sullivan and Paula Cormier.
Proud parents are Michael Martin and Deanna Battiste of Cordoy Valley. Grandparents are Joe and Anne Martin and Dennis and Valerie Battiste, all of Codroy Valley.
