The Bay St. George RCMP are investigating a fatal house fire in Mattis Point.
At 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 25, the police say they received a complaint of a residential fire in the community. They report multiple people escaped the fire; later in the evening, police located human remains inside the residence.
An investigation by the Bay St. George RCMP and Office of the Fire Commissioner determined the cause of the fire originated near the wood stove inside the residence and that this is the suspect cause of the fire.
The human remains located inside the residence are being sent to St. John's for an autopsy. The matter remains under investigation.
