A donation to Stephenville International Airport or the Regional Aquatic Centre in Stephenville was considered but deferred by Stephenville Crossing's town council last week, as the town's budget for the year has already been passed.

The Regional Aquatic Centre has asked surrounding municipalities to contribute to repairs needed at the pool. Their goal is to raise $25,000.

Councillor Cynthia Downey was in support of the idea.

"Any support that can be given toward the one third [they must pay for repairs] would be appreciated," she said.

Councillor Gerry Bennett said he could see giving them a donation next year, but that the letter requesting the donation came in late and not prior to the town passing next year's budget.

Recreation committee chair Lisa Lucas questioned why the Aquatic Centre would need donations from surrounding communities.

"They should know when these buildings need servicing," she said of the Town of Stephenville, "And be prepared to make repairs when necessary."

Council agreed to send a letter to the Aquatic Centre advising them they would defer making a donation at the present time but review the possibility next summer.

Next council discussed a similar letter requesting a donation for Stephenville airport.

Mayor Leona Webb and Councillor Downey excused themselves from council chambers prior to the airport talk, as they were both in conflict due to close ties with the airport.

Deputy Mayor Brian Joy led the discussion and suggested the town send the airport a letter similar to the one which will be drafted for the Aquatic Centre - essentially saying they will review the idea in June, as there may or may not be money for the town to re-allocate at that time.

Finance chair Vince Parsons said he would like to wait and see the airport's business plan, once it is completed. Deputy Mayor Joy agreed with the councillor and after a vote it was decided a letter be sent saying the town is in favour of giving money but not at this time.
