It's an opportunity to learn what it takes to be a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Tyler Hepditch of Stephenville and Robinson McFatridge of Stephenville Crossing, both 19-years-old, are participating in a summer work program formed between the police force and the Federation of Newfoundland Indians.

Their duties with the Bay St. George detachment include conducting seat belt and traffic surveys, attending bike rodeos and various events throughout the Southwest Coast, participating in MADD checkpoints, and learning about the different police units.

Mr. Hepditch said one of the most exciting parts of the program so far was a weeklong trip to St. John's. Besides an orientation, participants had the opportunity to meet various officers and find out about their units.

"It was a really good week and we learned a lot," he said.

Mr. McFatridge agreed it was a positive experience and noted they met a lot of people, including other program participants.

"A few of us even got a chance to fire off a few weapons ... at the shooting range," he said.

Const. Heather Shears of the RCMP's Bay St. George detachment said the program helps participants find out if they're interested in joining the police force.

"These guys touch on everything we do," she said. "Hopefully we can get them into a bit of everything - so by the end of their time, they're either saying, 'No it's not for me,' or 'You know what, I want to explore this a bit more.'"

Both Mr. Hepditch and Mr. McFatridge said they've considered a career with the RCMP.

"It's crossed my mind," said Mr. Hepditch. "I just finished my second year at Grenfell and this is a way to broaden my career path. This also helps me get involved in the community."

Mr. McFatridge said while he's thought about joining the RCMP, his current plans involve attending university.

The young men noted if community groups would like to avail of their services over the summer, they can be reached by calling the police station at 643-2118.
