Bob Byrnes has ended his tenure as chair and provincial government representative with Stephenville Airport Board.

I agreed to do it for two years and it ended up being three years and three months, said Mr. Byrnes.

Im still helping helping out wherever I can, but I just needed to step back for a little bit.

Minister Joan Burke, MHA for the district of St. Georges- Stephenville East, said Mr. Byrnes put a lot of effort into the position as the boards chair.

He was there for quite some time and in very turbulent times and did some really good work, said Minister Burke.

He went into it at a time when not a lot of people were interested in serving on that board and I certainly thank him for his time and still see him as a very valuable resource in the community when it comes to airport issues.

Minister Burke noted while she would be appointing a new provincial government representative to the board sometime this week, it is up to the board themselves to decide on the next chair.

Other members of the board are: Kevin Baker, Town of Stephenville representative; Cynthia Downey, Chamber of Commerce representative; Danny McCann, member at large; Mary OQuinn, Stephenville Airport Citizens representative; and Jack Tilley, employee representative.

People in the Bay St. George area looking for a get-away this winter might be in for a special treat.

Tony Young of Atlantic Escapes told the Georgian last week there would be a special, one-time only flight, from Stephenville to St. Pierre.

The flight by Air St. Pierre, will avail the airports international point-of-entry status to drop off French travellers wanting to ski at Marble Mountain and pick up local travellers wanting to visit the French island.

Mr. Young noted more flights to and from St. Pierre might be added, depending on the amount of interest received.
