The 32nd season of the Stephenville Theatre Festival is officially underway, having opened this past weekend with A Sculpin Named Sam. With two more openings this week, excitement is running high!
Those inclined to a warm, subtle comedy will want to catch Staircase, the Charles Dyer classic about an aging gay couple who own a barber shop in the East End of London.
Opening on July 15 at 8p.m., festival favourites Bryan Hennessey and Mark Bradbury take you up and down the Staircase in delightful style! Action takes place over one night as the two men contemplate their loving but often volatile past together and a possible future without each other. Staircase is performed in the intimate setting of Stage II at the Arts & Culture Centre.
Friday night, July 16, the curtain rises on our mainstage musical theatre offering, Little Shop of Horrors. Set in the early 60s and featuring some great rock ‘n roll, doo-wop and Motown style tunes, Little Shop is one show you’ll want to bring the whole family to see.
The story line focuses on a skid row orphan whose life takes a major turn when he discovers a ‘strange and interesting plant’ during a total eclipse of the sun.
Little Shop features Steven Heisler as the orphan, Michael Fenwick as Mushnik the florist, Kate Etienne as the innocent love interest, and Keith Pike as the sadistic dentist who meets a very unusual end! On stage again Sunday evening, July 18, Little Shop will have only seven performances during the season, so get your tickets early!
Why not make Saturday, July 10 a family day, and bring the kids to the second showing of A Sculpin Named Sam, directed by Stephenville’s own Allison Basha.
Starting at 2 p.m., Sculpin teaches the value of friendship within a lovely story set in and around the waters of Fogo. Sam Sculpin, played by newcomer Robert Murphy, tries to outwit Jim Long who wants to cook Sam and his friends for supper!
Tickets are going quickly for our first of five Tuesday Night Dinner Theatres on July 20. With a three-course meal, and live dinner music followed by a show, it’s the best deal in town for a Tuesday night! Catering is provided by Fillmore’s Fine Dining and menus for each night are available at the box office when you book your ticket.
